Workshop Formal Summary

Time, Date, and Travel Information
May 22nd – 24th, PTC Headquarters.
Travel is covered by the NSF for selected attendees.

Background
The EDGE project is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) with goals to define, implement, and disseminate generative design thinking, a new form of design thinking enhanced by generative AI, to facilitate the teaching and learning of generative design at undergraduate levels.

Workshop Goals

  1. Best practices for teaching generative design and generative AI in engineering.
  2. Idea exchange on generative design curriculum development.
  3. Industrial-academia collaboration for cutting-edge developments in generative design research and computer-aided design (CAD) education.

Highlights

  • Industrial session led by PTC and Institute for Future Intelligence (IFI) on showcasing cutting-edge CAD software, including Creo, Onshape, and Aladdin.
  • Curriculum demonstrations with insights from experienced instructors from up to ten universities and colleges.
  • Roundtable sessions to discuss the implementation of generative design curricula, exchange the best ideas for teaching generative design and generative design thinking, and potential collaboration opportunities on design research and education research.

Workshop Agenda

Day One (May 22nd) (Recording)

Day Two (May 23rd) (Morning Session Recording), (Afternoon Session Recording)

Day Three (May 24th)

  • 8:30 – 9:00 AM – Breakfast and Networking
  • 9:00 – 10:00 AM – PTC CXC Tour (session attendance optional)
  • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM – Roundtable Discussion Session (Topic: Education Research, Design Research, and Collaboration)
  • 12:00 PM – 12:30 PM – Conclusions and Future Collaboration Opportunities

Industry Collaborators

PTC offers a unique portfolio of software solutions for the development process of a wide range of products. Driving excellence in engineering and design, PTC is dedicated to defining the next generation of engineering technology. Check out the Corporate Experience Center (CXC) for a closer look at how PTC’s technologies are transforming digital and physical design.

The Institute for Future Intelligence is spearheading research on the frontier of human-AI technology via Aladdin, an open-source web-based CAD/CAE platform that allows the design and performance simulation of energy-efficient houses using traditional and generative design methods. Aladdin also facilitates engineering education by allowing teachers and researchers to develop and implement curriculum modules to teach design concepts.
